Overview
A growing library of running content.
As a runner myself, this was a project I could relate to. The Running Channel needed a website that could bring its videos, articles and team together, with a structure that would still be manageable as more content was added.
Working from the agreed visual direction, we developed the layouts for the inner pages. I then built the website in WordPress, including dedicated areas for videos, news and presenter profiles.
The video library was an important part of the build. The team already had hundreds of videos, so keeping them in the same admin list as pages such as About and Contact would quickly become awkward. I gave videos their own section, with categories and distance groupings to help organise them.

The details
Avoiding hundreds of manual entries.
The team supplied a spreadsheet of its existing videos. I set up an import for the titles, descriptions, video links, images and publishing dates, along with the categories and distances. This meant the library could be brought across without someone creating every entry individually.
I also connected the newsletter forms to the team’s mailing list and made it straightforward to add new YouTube videos through WordPress.
A working relationship beyond launch.
The website launched in September 2020. Since then, I’ve continued to help the team make changes as its publishing and commercial needs have developed.
Later work has included revised homepage and article layouts, controls for choosing related stories, advertising updates and a Cloudflare setup. It’s an ongoing relationship, with someone familiar with the website available when the team needs development help.
